Our workgroup’s mission is to promote, organize and update the role of clinical pharmacists in the realm of transplantation.
Spain is the world leader leader in organ donation and transplantation. Given the complexity of the treatments administered to transplant recipients, it is essential to expand the role played by hospital pharmacists to respond to the needs of this patient population.
The Farmatrasplante workgroup seeks to ensure that transplant pharmacists acquire the knowledge they need to optimize the pharmacological treatments administered to transplant recipients, thereby improving patient outcomes following organ transplantation.
It has been demonstrated that therapeutic adherence is clearly associated with the evolution of the transplant, the appearance of infections and the rejection (or otherwise) of the transplanted organ. For that reason, one of the main goals of the workgroup is to educate transplant recipients, making them aware that they can resort to their hospital pharmacists as a trusted professional.
Moreover, our workgroup is firmly committed with the promotion of research and the development of innovative projects such as telepharmacy, which can go a long way in improving the care provided to transplant recipients and increasing the evidence available on the benefits of integrating clinical pharmacists into the multidisciplinary team responsible for looking after the patient.
