The Spanish Pediatric Pharmacy Group was created in Madrid in September 1998 as part of the Spanish Society of Hospital Pharmacists. Its mission the enhancement of the quality of care provided to pediatric patients through the specialization of pharmacists in the study of the specific problems affecting these patients.

General goals

To determine the problems affecting the pediatric population with respect to the use of medicines. The multiple difficulties faced by children in this regard often include the following: drug not indicated in pediatric patients, the lack of appropriate pediatric dosage forms, the lack of oral ad-hoc dosage forms and the limited bioavailability of extemporaneous preparations, both those formulated in-house and those coming from the pharmaceutical industry.
To propose solutions to the problems identified, determining which may be reasonably addressed by solely a hospital pharmacy and which require the collaboration of the pharmaceutical industry.
To encourage the pharmaceutical industry to become more decidedly involved with pediatric pharmacological therapy, increasing the effectiveness of preparations and bridging the legal gap that currently exists with respect to the use of certain drugs in these patients.
To inform the health authorities of the real situation of pediatric pharmaceutical care so that they establish the mechanisms required (tax rebates, etc.) for the pharmaceutical industry to be able to profitably market pharmaceutical preparations adapted to the pediatric population.
To establish a basic framework for the relationship between the health authorities, the industry and the pharmacists involved with pediatric preparations so that the goals above can be achieved.
