GENERAL GOAL

To promote the specialization of clinical pharmacist in the field of surgery, advocating for the importance of including the hospital pharmacist into the multidisciplinary care team as an indispensable member able to provide valuable input throughout the surgical process.

SPECIFIC GOALS

1 – DRUG THERAPY:

  • To ensure the provision of a drug therapy that meets the highest quality and safety standards throughout the surgical process.
  • To raise awareness of the importance of analyzing the patient’s preoperative health status and medication regimen to prevent unnecessary cancellations of surgical procedures resulting from a poor management of chronic medication.
  • To promote intraoperative safety.
  • To work towards optimizing the management of postoperative drug therapy.
  • To strive to prevent surgery-related infections.
  • To contribute to an improved management of pain in surgical patients.
  • To contribute to optimizing glycemic control in surgical patients.
  • To contribute to optimizing the management of nausea and vomiting in surgical patients.
  • To contribute to optimizing the management of thromboprophylaxis.
  • To standardize the criteria governing the reconciliation of discharge medications (anticoagulants, antidiabetic drugs, etc.).

2 - COMMUNICATION:

  • To ensure that hospital pharmacists become familiar with the most effective techniques for communicating with patients.
  • To develop communication techniques leading to a closer integration of hospital pharmacists in multidisciplinary care teams.

3 - TRAINING:

  • To ensure that hospital pharmacists receive proper training in surgical practice.

4 - RESEARCH:

  • To promote research into the role of clinical pharmacy in the surgical setting, with a special focus on patient safety.
  • To promote the performance of collaborative research projects between members of the Faquir workgroup and those of other workgroups.
  • To encourage the publication of articles that dwell on the role played by pharmacists in multidisciplinary surgical teams.

5 - EXTERNAL ACTION:

  • To encourage hospital pharmacists to participate in Spanish and international conferences on surgical specialties.
  • To establish links between the Faquir workgroup and other Workgroups in Spain with a view to improving the care provided to surgical patients and translational research.
