Introduction

General goal:

The AFINF Workgroup seeks to promote and standardize the work carried out by hospital pharmacy departments in the realm of antibiotic therapy and antibiotic stewardship, antiviral therapy and antifungal therapy. It carries out its work in collaboration with whatever multidisciplinary team may be involved in the management of infectious diseases.

Specific goals

  • To develop a working methodology aimed at standardizing the work of hospital pharmacists in the realm of anti-infections therapy and anti-infectious stewardship.
  • To encourage the generation of new knowledge in the field of infectious diseases.
  • To prepare patient-targeted information on anti-infectious therapies so as to raise awareness on the purpose of the treatment, improve adherence and prevent therapeutic failure. Patients should also be able to recognize potential side effects and manage them appropriately.
  • To conduct research projects using the appropriate scientific methodology so as to generate the knowledge required to improve the outcomes of anti-infectious treatment.
  • To evaluate new anti-infectious drugs using the GENESIS methodology.
  • Prepare consensus documents.
  • To work with other Spanish scientific societies such as the Spanish Society for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology (SEIMC) to promote a wide range of educational activities. Work with fellow scientific societies from other countries.
  • Advise, inform and collaborate with public authorities; healthcare and research agencies; universities; and the pharmaceutical industry on all aspects related to infectious diseases..

The importance of appropriate prescription and follow-up of antimicrobial treatment cannot be overstated. On the one hand they increase the effectiveness and safety of the treatment and, on the other, they help avoid the increase in resistances at community level. This improves the availability of antimicrobials for the treatment of both hospital-based and community-acquired infections.

The establishment of the AFinf Workgroup (workgroup for the pharmaceutical care of infectious diseases) was approved by SEFH’s Governance Board on 15 December 2008.

The AFinf workgroup will work independently from commercial influence, following a rigorous scientific methodology and with transparency.
